Charlie Foulkes's profile

Personal Statement
My name is Charlie Foulkes and I’m a photographer from Cambridge now studying in London.
I’ve been pursuing photography for over 8 years now covering a broad range of topics, but my main passion is in documenting Skateboarding, the culture and community, and boosting local talent as it’s very important to me. Through skateboarding I have developed a thorough understanding of lighting and composition among various other skills. This has allowed me to attain coverage in one of the top UK skate magazines, ‘The Skateboarder’s Companion’ who have recently asked me to shoot an interview section for.

In this portfolio I have aimed to include photos that demonstrate my skill set and creative eye towards my work. This group of images includes some studio work, experimental flash styles with colour gels, client work for Sport London, product photography for my new jewellery business, natural lighting and of course, skateboarding shots.
Although I enjoy shooting in a studio setting and am able to utilise many different lighting setups, I prefer shooting on location with my own speedlites, radio triggers and a mixture of D.I.Y filters. My thought process is if I can create professional looking photos even with somewhat crude setups, then by the time I can afford top end equipment it’ll only push my photography forward and not hinder it.

My main career goal I’m working towards is being a staff photographer for a Skateboard magazine, as the possibility of this goal is gradually becoming more evident. However, because the skateboard industry is very underfunded, I’ll be doing freelance work on top of that to help make a living.
